The “Chalet” Style – An Atmosphere of Wood and Stone

(It) Come arredare confortevolmente la tua casa nello stile Chalet. Alcune sottigliezze e caratteristiche di arredo dello specialista di design.

Although the Chalet style is considered rustic, it has now firmly entered urban aesthetics due to its nobility and originality. Despite some roughness and rusticity, this style is very popular among wealthy people who strive to create a cozy and simultaneously refined living space, sparing no expense. Creating a home reminiscent of a ski resort dwelling is a cherished dream of many affluent individuals.

I should start by saying that the “chalet” style is primarily intended for a country house located in the mountains, as it perfectly suits the winter, northern aesthetic. Often, it is a rather large and opulent house, but a small villa can also be furnished in this style.

Great attention is paid not only to creating interiors but also to the facade of the house, as the “chalet” style has its own unique image – the lower part of the house should be made of stone, and the upper part of wood. Originally, the word “chalet” referred to shepherd’s houses in the mountainous areas of the Alps, and such a house always had this structure. Almost always, these houses had a large gabled roof with an attic, constructed from logs and timber.

This is, so to speak, the classic interpretation of the image. However, if approached creatively and freely, a city apartment or even just one room can be decorated in the “chalet” style.

Therefore, this style has once again become fashionable and is gaining popularity, as with the advent of modern building materials, it can be achieved for a relatively small amount of money.

Here are some features of creating an interior in the “chalet” style:

  • An abundance of stone and wood in the interior;
  • A certain “fairy-tale” quality of the setting, where even the smallest details are carefully thought out;
  • Finishing with natural materials or their high-quality imitation;
  • Wooden ceilings, sometimes it’s enough to use only wooden ceiling beams;
  • Large wooden windows;
  • A mandatory fireplace in the interior of the living room or bedroom.

Now, let’s delve into how to furnish various rooms of a house following the chalet-style aesthetic.

Living Room

The living room can be decorated to embody the aesthetics of a hunting lodge, which means stone or wooden walls, a fireplace, animal trophies, and cold weapons on the walls, and fur skins on the floor or seats. This is one interpretation of the “chalet” image.

Another interpretation is the interior of a knight’s castle. This would typically involve a high ceiling with wooden beams or entirely wooden with a huge chandelier made of black metal, solid wooden furniture with a large dining table and high chairs, and a significant-sized fireplace. This variant is more suitable for the living room of a large country house.

As you might have noticed, the centerpiece of the chalet-style interior is the fireplace. Unlike other styles where it recedes into the background, in a chalet living room, it’s the main attribute that creates coziness and warmth. Furniture is arranged around the fireplace.

The fireplace should be adorned with natural stone or high-quality imitation. Animal trophies above the fireplace can be quite striking. A large TV can also be mounted above the fireplace, facing a large sofa and armchairs.

Living room floors should be wooden or wooden planks, imitating a boarded floor. A carpet resembling animal hide on the floor looks very attractive.

Wall decoration is minimal, often fully clad in wood

Windows should also be wooden with impressive sizes, sometimes from floor to ceiling. The ceiling is high, wood-finished, with plenty of wooden beams and rafters. A large, simple, metal chandelier with multiple lights is a must.

Choose solid sofas with natural upholstery for the living room furniture. Leather upholstery looks striking, but alternatives like wool, velvet, or linen are also suitable. Tapestries can be beautifully incorporated into such interiors. For apartment interiors, synthetic fabric upholstery is suitable, but wall finishes should be lighter and simpler.

The primary color palette of the living room is warm – with orange, brown, gray, and beige shades that complement the wood texture. Other colors should only be used as accents.

Lighting in the living room should be subdued, sometimes even minimal, just accentuating the light from the fireplace. To avoid constantly using the central chandelier, it’s useful to have several separate light fixtures or floor lamps between the windows, by the chairs, or at the entrance.

A chalet-style living room can also be set up on a veranda – this style lends itself well to such a setting. Especially, it looks beautiful on an enclosed terrace.

Bedroom

The bedroom in a chalet style is incredibly cozy. Natural finishing, soft light, and the crackling of burning logs in the fireplace – what could be better?

Like in the living room, a fireplace is a mandatory attribute in the bedroom. Some may argue that it’s inefficient, costly, or simply not functional, but without it, the charm of the chalet style is lost, as the hearth in a country house is the most important place. It’s best to adhere to tradition if you want to have central heating, but don’t give up on the fireplace, as it adds a magical effect.

The bed is the focal point in the bedroom. It should be large, though bunk beds are sometimes used, especially in children’s rooms or guest houses.

Wall and ceiling finishes should follow the living room style. However, the presence of wood is essential, as it’s a chalet style.

Textiles for the bedroom must be made of natural fabrics in calm, neutral shades. Bedspreads imitating animal fur look very effective.

The style of the wardrobes can be simple, rustic, or classic with rich wood carvings. The bed can also be ornately designed, adding an extra element of ‘fairytale’ to the room.

Kitchen and Dining Room

The kitchen is the heart of the rural home, and the chalet-style home is no exception. Therefore, the finishing of the kitchen should also be done using natural materials, as they are excellent at storing and radiating warmth.

Wood should predominate in the kitchen, as in other chalet-style rooms.

Kitchen appliances should be disguised behind wooden kitchen facades. They should not distract from the overall “country” impression, but if complete camouflage is impossible, choose steel-colored appliances. This applies to the choice of a refrigerator, which should not be white.

In a traditional alpine chalet, the kitchen was almost always combined with the dining room. I think this is a good solution, and it’s best to stick to it. In any case, the kitchen and dining room in this style will look uniquely impressive.
