Timeless Classic in a New Interpretation: Neoclassicism

Are you going to make repairs? Or building a house? Do you already know what your bathroom will look like? Are you going to make repairs? Or building a house? Do you already know what your bathroom will look like?

This style is particularly favored by those who wish to create a sort of “ancestral nest” out of their dwelling, complete with its own traditions and lifestyle. Neoclassicism has become especially popular in recent years, and it’s not surprising, as many people now strive to revive traditions and family values, and the neoclassical interior style copes wonderfully with this mission.

Main Features

Natural Colors

Embracing the neoclassical principle that man is the measure of all things, the primary color palette for a neoclassical interior is selected from natural, human-like colors such as beige, flesh, ochre, sand, brown, golden, and all shades of white. These colors form the base of the color palette, with more saturated shades serving as accents.

Though neoclassicism allows for the use of modern furniture items and lighting fixtures alongside purely classical elements like moldings and stucco, they must conform to the overall palette in pastel tones. Bright multicolored prints have no place in a classical interior.

Strict Layout

Every classical interior adheres to harmony requirements, thus necessitating symmetry and strict adherence to proportions in layout. This is easier in large, spacious rooms with high ceilings and big windows. However, even small rooms can be furnished while maintaining the principle of symmetry.

The strictness of lines and clear planning helps to create an elegant and aristocratic interior, even on a modest base, though neoclassicism itself cannot be cheap by nature.

In living room interiors, furniture is ideally arranged around the fireplace, identifying it as the compositional center. Above it, one might hang a painting or mirror, flanked by two identical armchairs or small sofas, with a small table in the center.

Remember, furniture shouldn’t clutter the room space. This is the main principle of classicism. Nothing should prevent a person from feeling calm and comfortable. This applies to vertically placed items as well.

Special Furniture

What’s a classical style interior without ornate, carved furniture with curved legs and beautiful upholstery? And classical cabinets made of expensive wood with glass vitrines and antique chests of drawers… But, surprisingly, this isn’t a necessity.

In the neoclassical style, contemporary furniture can easily replace classical equivalents, and a soft pouffe can look just as good as an expensive Empire-style couch.

This is done to slightly “tone down” and make the interior cozier and homier, rather than pompous and ceremonial like the old classic. However, it’s impossible to completely forego antique-style furniture; there still needs to be a few pieces of special classical-themed furniture.

Classical furniture differs, particularly in its geography. For example, American neoclassicism suggests more understated finishes, without any excesses. Here, sternness and respectability are valued.

However, the French version of neoclassicism allows for a touch of romance and elegance in the interior – ornate ornaments, silvered hardware, luxurious candlesticks, canopies in the bedroom, etc. This approach is more striking but still adheres to harmony and symmetry requirements.

Natural Ornaments

Neoclassical design favors simple and unobtrusive natural motifs, eschewing complexity, contrasts, and visual illusions for classical harmony. Even basic striped fabrics should blend seamlessly, avoiding attention.

Floral motifs in finishes, carpet patterns, and fabrics are acceptable, but they should subtly complement the overall design without becoming focal points.

Effortless Decor

In neoclassical design, less is more – think gracefully draping curtains in luxurious fabrics, rather than the lavish, intricately draped ones of classic interiors. Wall sconces, mirrors in elegant frames, vases, and paintings, while present, serve more functional than decorative purposes.

Lighting choices lean towards opulence, with crystal chandeliers harmonizing with ceiling moldings, and other light fixtures symmetrically placed and crafted from exquisite materials.
