3.9. Kitchen Furniture Layout: Techniques and Tips for an Ideal Arrangement

When arranging kitchen furniture, it’s vital to consult with the primary kitchen user, often the homeowner. Understanding the specifics of their cooking habits, food storage needs, and dining routine is crucial. Accurate planning for ventilation systems, exhausts, and the appropriate size of appliances like refrigerators is also essential.

In many older homes, kitchens can be quite small, posing a challenge for effective furniture layout. If a non-professional tackles the design, common mistakes might include:

  • Creating “gaps” in furniture placement or, conversely, an inability to fit certain cabinets.
  • Improperly moving utilities, leading to additional expenses and reworking project documentation.
  • Overlooking the placement of electrical outlets, resulting in necessary sockets being covered by cabinets.
  • Incorrect furniture arrangement where cabinet doors obstruct each other or can’t open fully.

Let’s discuss some key steps in selecting and arranging kitchen furniture:

Choosing and Installing Furniture While ready-made sets are cheaper, custom-made furniture can solve many space-related issues, although at a higher cost. Even with standard furniture, certain layout techniques can optimize space.

In tiny kitchens, placing all kitchen units along one wall, known as a linear layout, is best. This keeps the space from feeling cluttered.

The most common arrangement is the “L”-shape, utilizing two adjoining walls and a corner, suitable for both small apartments and larger homes

For larger kitchens, the “U”-shape with a central dining area works well, or a simplified version with parallel units along opposite walls is suitable for longer kitchens.

Spacious kitchens can benefit from an island-style layout, grouping cabinets and appliances centrally and leaving corners free. This requires thoughtful planning of utilities.

Effective Placement The key is to create a “working triangle” with the refrigerator, sink, and stove forming the triangle’s corners, each side measuring 1.5 to 2.5 meters. This is feasible in all layout types. In linear layouts, positioning the refrigerator at one end can help complete the triangle.

Consider the refrigerator’s proximity to electrical outlets. For cooktops, a separate 3.5V socket and safety switch are advisable.

Regarding the sink, opt for larger sizes, preferably with dual basins if space allows. Choose a high faucet and a deep sink for washing large pots. If right-handed, place the dishwasher to the sink’s left.

Color Selection Choosing the right color palette is vital, as overly cold hues might not stimulate the appetite, while overly bright colors can agitate. Striking a balance is key.
