Eclecticism – The Combination of Opposites

Are you going to make repairs? Or building a house? Do you already know what your bathroom will look like?Are you going to make repairs? Or building a house? Do you already know what your bathroom will look like?

At first glance, an interior decorated in an eclectic style may seem rather chaotic and disorganized, but over time this impression fades, and everything begins to appear quite fascinating and original. After all, the primary purpose of the “eclectic” style is to combine utterly incompatible and opposing things.

And despite the seeming ease of the task, it is quite difficult to accomplish. It requires wit, a broad outlook, and high professionalism. Because this “colorful mix” in the interior must also, surprisingly, adhere to strict rules to prevent the interior from looking like an overstuffed storeroom.

Thanks to its diversity and freedom, the “eclectic” style has broken out as a leader in global design fashion and has been at the peak of popularity for many years. I believe it will not soon descend from there, as more and more clients are approaching me with the desire to furnish their home or apartment precisely in an eclectic manner.

To stay within the bounds of harmony and good taste when creating an eclectic interior, the following rules must be observed:

  • Always choose one style as the foundation, onto which, like beads, we will string other interesting components, most often these are neoclassicism, minimalism, and Scandinavian styles;
  • All furniture in the interior should be matched in color, and sometimes even in texture, but it’s not necessary to create a multicolored environment, designers usually choose three basic colors;
  • Textiles also should be chosen following all the rules of color matching – they should harmonize in color with the entire setting;
  • Do not clutter the room space with furniture and accessories, as this will create chaos and confusion.

Color Palette

While bright and bold color combinations can be used in living rooms, bedrooms should feature calmer or natural shades to avoid discomfort. Use color contrasts thoughtfully, complemented by harmonious combinations. For instance, harmonize a vibrant sofa with color-coordinated pillows that match the curtains. Conversely, a subdued sofa can be accented with bright curtains or pillows.

Wall and Ceiling Finishing

Eclectic style allows various approaches to wall and ceiling decoration. It could range from neutral tones to bright, contrasting colors. A popular choice is a light ceiling with dark walls, like light blue ceilings and navy walls, or one dark wall with others matching the ceiling. The combination of a dark ceiling with light walls is also possible.

Eclectic style accommodates diverse methods like wall painting, tiling, or multicolored wallpaper. Anything goes in eclectic design, embodying the fusion of opposites.

Floors Flooring

in eclectic interiors can reflect personal taste as there are no strict rules. Tiles or parquet are ideal, but laminate or wood-effect linoleum are cost-effective alternatives.

Carpets of varying textures and colors are a cornerstone of eclectic style. Incorporating both modern and retro carpets enriches the interior.

Furniture

Choice Eclectic interiors welcome furniture from different styles and eras. Cherished pieces can be seamlessly integrated with new finishes or decorations.

Vintage furniture should be kept as is, serving as a focal point and defining element of the room’s style.

Decoration

Eclectic style is a playground for diverse decor. Paintings, photographs, vases, candle holders, sculptures, figurines – all can enhance an eclectic interior. The key is to intelligently combine these elements without creating clutter or discord.

Textiles

Diverse in texture, textiles should color-coordinate with furniture and walls. Avoid heavy, ornate drapes with fringes or elaborate tie-backs, as they can appear tasteless in eclectic settings.

Lighting

Eclectic decor doesn’t prescribe specific lighting styles, but they should complement the overall ambiance. A luxurious crystal chandelier can be an impressive focal point. Unusual shapes and materials in lighting fixtures are also highly encouraged.

Eclectic style is ideal for those who value freedom and have a collection of cherished items. For a personalized eclectic design, feel free to consult me, designer Olesya Blashchenko, for a harmonious and optimal solution.
