3.15. Choosing Interior Doors: Key Guidelines

Selecting the right interior doors is crucial for the overall design of an apartment or a country house. Interior doors should be as sturdy and durable as front doors while ensuring ease of operation without causing inconvenience to the occupants.

Before purchasing, measure all door openings and decide which way the doors will swing. According to design standards, doors leading to bathrooms, kitchens, and toilets should open outwards for safety reasons, while doors opening into corridors should open inwards to avoid hitting someone. It’s recommended that doors to children’s rooms open outwards for safety and accessibility.

Focusing only on the aesthetic appeal of doors can lead to various issues:

  • Underneath dark tinting, material defects can be concealed;
  • Doors with full glass inserts can be risky as they may shatter and cause injuries;
  • If not carefully inspected, you might end up purchasing a door that is fundamentally flawed in structure.

Now, let’s discuss what you should consider when buying interior doors.

Quality

The best option is doors made from solid wood. They are expensive but durable and elegant, especially suitable for larger homes. Another good choice is veneered doors made from cheaper wood species covered with a finer wood veneer. Pay attention to the manufacturer’s reputation when choosing these doors.

MDF doors are gaining popularity due to their eco-friendliness, strength, and resistance to external factors.

Doors made from particleboard (DSP) are the cheapest option. They lack significant positive attributes but can be a budget-friendly choice.

Size

Standard door heights are 200 and 210 cm. For residential rooms, a width of 80 cm is recommended, while 60-70 cm is suitable for bathrooms and toilets. For kitchens, 70 cm wide doors are preferred, and for living rooms, double doors totaling 120 cm in width can be a great choice.

To determine the necessary door size, measure the width and height of the door opening, then subtract 6 cm from the height and 10 cm from the width. This will be the size of your door. Make sure to measure accurately, as even slight discrepancies can lead to poor fitting.

Style and Hardware

The doors are categorized into white, dark, and medium tones. Neutral tones fit all interiors.

  • White doors brighten the interior and make rooms appear larger.
  • Dark doors suit large apartments but should not be combined with dark walls and floors.
  • Skirting boards should either match the floor or the door. Painting them a different color than the door is a modern approach.
  • The floor and door can be the same color, which looks ideal in any design. However, they can also contrast, provided the contrast isn’t too stark.
  • Furniture should harmonize with the doors. Dark floors and doors pair well with light-toned furniture, accentuated with darker details matching the door color.
  • Door hardware should align with the room’s overall style. Lightweight, coating-free handles are preferred. Open hinges don’t suit high-tech styles. Smaller glass inserts are safer.
